This project is a collaboration between visual artist Cheng Yen Pheng (founder of Round Flat Art Studio) and traditional performing arts troupe BaiZam Generation (with two dalangs Kamarul Baihaqi Bin Hussin and Kamarul Baisah) to create a wayang kulit piece that tells the story of Wau Lang. 

After conducting her artistic research and exploration on wau with the community in Terengganu earlier this year, the visual artist Cheng Yen Pheng discovered Wau Lang, which is a distinctive type of wau that is only made and played by a specific community from the kampung areas in Chendering, Terengganu during the monsoon season. She felt this fascinating local heritage is worth sharing with more people as this cultural practise is not widely known even for fellow Malaysians. 

With this in mind, she decided to create a visually engaging and imaginative narrative that will highlight its cultural and social significance using the traditional shadow play performing art form based on the information that she collected during her research and engagement with the Wau Lang community/practitioners. 

The collaboration process will involve story development, character design and puppet making culminating in a wayang kulit performance entitled “Panggilan Lang” which will be recorded in a video to be screened online for free as a public event. There will also be a behind-the-scenes video which will include footage of the collaborative process and also interviews with the visual artist and the dalangs. The online screening event will end with a dialogue session with the key participating artists.
