In 1989, husband-and-wife team Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham OAM joined hands to pursue a dream by establishing The Actors Studio. Unbeknownst to them, this dream became a phenomenal driving force that has and continues to redefine the arts in Malaysia.

Seven venues on and hundreds of award-winning productions later, the Actors Studio’s expertise remains unrivalled. It has presented almost 600 productions and over a million people have passed through the doors of its theatres.

In 2006, it created The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat arm to bridge the gap between the arts and the people. It has staged many classics under TAS Seni Teater Rakyat such as “Uda dan Dara” and revived the interest in traditional art forms through productions like “Mak Yong Titis Sakti”. It has also been a key driver behind the development of new works like “Kandang” and “Dato’ Seri”.

Bangsawan

Before television came about, Bangsawan theatre was one of the main forms of entertainment as Bangsawan troupes travelled from village to village to perform. What makes it such an entertaining and unique experience is that it brings together the different facets of the arts – theatre, music, dance, poetry, comedy and even martial arts.

For the first time ever, The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat will be collaborating with Mekar Budaya to revive this age-old art form and pay tribute to Rahman B, a living legend whose name is synonymous with Bangsawan theatre and the last surviving practitioner of his generation. As part of ArtsFAS 2021 season, Dr. Marlenny Deenerwan will be directing a Bangsawan play entitled “Hikayat Si Miskin Menjadi Raja” which is loosely based on Mark Twain’s “The Prince and the Pauper”.
