Masakini Theatre Company was established by Sabera Shaik in 2004 after many years of producing and free-lancing for several theatre companies.
The thrust of theatre works by Masakini have always been local or Nusantara based. In recent years, contemporary shadow theatre and Wayang have been the thrust of our work with “training in performance” a part of an ongoing programme. Currently there are 7 young actors undergoing training online with more expected to join.
Masakini has presented its Wayang footprint across the globe, which includes performances in Denmark, Tehran, London, Brazil, South Africa, India and Indonesia. Masakini Theatre Company has a close professional relationship with world renowned theatre company, Odin Teatret in Denmark, where Sabera Shaik has performed under theatre director, Eugenio Barba.
Lari
Lari is part of a six episode devised performance called People Without History.
In this part of the story a young girl decides to leave her community for personal reasons and is confronted and intimidated by the community when they found out that she was leaving. They accuse her of deserting them and all that they stand for.
At first, traumatized by their rabid behaviour she keels under the pressure but regains her equilibrium and begins to believe in herself again. As she celebrates her strength and all that she stands for a new group of people befriends her and beckons her into their community.
At first everything is good as she adopts their ways, and she is happy in her adoptive community who seem to respect and love her. But as time passes they abuse her trust. Like a used garbage bag, they throw her into the lion’s den.
Realising that they are no better than her own community, she once again gets up and leaves to find her own way.
‘Tiga Rawana’
